Knowing Pro Bono

I am known to say to friends and family "my principal could NEVER truly pay me for the hours and hours of work I do over and above my school day, or my 'contractual agreements' via my union membership." I am ok with that. I am very ok with that.

My work is for me something that they spoke of way back in my elementary days in Catholic school--my vocation, my calling....it is way more than a gig to pay the bills...it is much deeper than a "job". I count my blessings every single day for the honor of doing work that I love with children that I treasure.

So yesterday, I chuckled on my way to a birthday dinner for my godmother (whose birthday is Sunday--coming) with a nod to me (whose birthday was Thursday -just passed). A former student--I'll call her Karen...came to visit me. She is a young woman now. We laughed and reminisced at memories she has of her time at our junior high school. She chuckled lovingly as she recounted times that "...you closed the door in my face. Told me to go to class! "

...She knows she talks A LOT. And yesterday, she talked and reminisced and shared painful times, and shared good times, and asked for current advice and walked back and forth with me to the office as I made copies and prepared documents.

At times--OH MY!--there she was at my elbow--asking again for a better answer to her most recent question.

I told her how memories of her time at our school, and more specifically , her time in my office were flooding back to me during this, our Friday afternoon chat session. She shared how "I need counseling!" and offered to pay me for Friday sessions. Her earnestness touched my heart.

And we talked some more...and we laughed...and in the laughter there was healing...and in the words, I know that she will pluck some ripe ones, some right ones, some just- on- time ones...and apply them to her life...and continue to strive and to plan and to make good things happen for herself...
...Just like back when she was our student...way back when...
and for my longest counseling session of the day: I am truly grateful.

There are some things that cannot be paid for with money. We pay it forward with love and gratitude for whatever we can do to touch and heal another human being on this journey.

I give thanks.

The following is a bit of the note I sent my team at school last night...

Dear 7th Grade Team!
Wanted to update you about my "rains-it-pours" story...
As you may know, I was out on Wed and Thurs of last week.
Asthma.
Came in to school on Friday.
Friday night--rough asthma attack.
Meds at home pretty much out/expired/ineffective.

Called my doc who after cursing me out (gently) called in a heavy battery of asthma medications to my pharmacy.
Went to pick up the meds at 8:30 Friday night.
Stopped by the store to get lemons for the hot tea I planned to drink all night.
OOPS!! Fell, went flying,and sprained my ankle badly.
Iced it, elevated, went to bed. Thought all was fine.
NOT.
BY midnight--PAINCAN'TWALK,OMG!!!!

Took my first ride in an ambulance (with nubulizer on my face, and giant wrap and ice pack on my ankle)( can you spell big white watermelon? ) ....Oh, joy. not the look i was going for.
Got the the ER--doc looks at me, says "which came first"? Y'all know I love to laugh--we just fell out laughing. Good endorphins for the outrageous pain I was in. UGH.
By 3:00am, xrays, nothing broken, wrap, meds, and doctors orders: ice, elevate, stay off of feet, and enjoy this nice new cane we got for ya'...
UGH.

So, dear colleagues--I will not be in on Monday.
I will try to come in for Tues, Wed.
I'm playing it by ear...

Please fell VERY free to be VERY clear with the children as to the reason I am out.
I want them to know. With last couple weeks, election day/veterans/report card/acs stuff/me out wed,thurs, i have had more CANCELLED appointments than I am comfortable with. I want them to know that I am quite ill with asthma and sprained my ankle..can't get to school w/subway madness....yada yada yada...

So, that's my weekend adventure.
Happy to report...I'm healing...I'm healing...
JOY JOY, and again--gratitude is mine.

What a Feast!- The Farmer's Market today

Yes...it was a feast. I am full. I feel joy. I am satisfied (and I have not tasted anything as yet!) .

The Farmer's Market today , here in Brooklyn at Grand Army Plaza was a lush landscape of abundance, heady scents and gorgeous kaleidoscopic autumn hues.... (and did I mention it was amazing!?)

Wow!

I walked from stand to stand...sometimes simply to touch the fruit, to rub my fingertips along a rough golden patch of "veins" along the top of the red pepper...to feel the weight of a juicy looking tomato in my hands...to pinch and rub the fresh basil, then AHHH....smell, taste-through-smell, and smell again...

Hmmm.....the candy apples bright glossy caramel joy....

I am in heaven. Heaven here on earth. Autumn, I love you! I give thanks.

Going to the Airport

I do enjoy arriving at the airport 2 hours ahead of time. It makes the whole process of going through security and finding the gate, and gathering my thoughts so much easier and so much less stressful. I profoundly dislike the whole "security" process. With respect to all TSA staff out there, I find the process idiotic, demeaning , heartless and fear-based. It is an ugly way to start off the whole "how does that big tank stay up in the air?" experience.

I need time to come back to center from that experience...

2 hours gives me just the time I need to walk the bridge from the ugliness of that experience to the true miracle of the fact that I will, indeed be up above the clouds for hours in a tank full of people and luggage and gasoline, and that , by grace, we shall arrive somewhere new...and begin another chapter ... How amazing is that!?

Now I'm being told that Daniel Schuler (husband of the woman who drove the wrong way on the Taconic State Parkway and killed 8 people)... says that his wife, Diane had used Anbesol on her teeth and gums....and that is what was in her bloodstream , ladies and gentlemen! Anbesol! Not Al-co-hol! An-be-sol! OK!? Don't mix it up, now!

Well, shucks! I guess I am getting this information right on time for my back-to-school shopping! OBVIOUSLY, I need to go-buy-me some Anbesol to keep in my desk drawer at school! Cuz, lemme tell you!-those amazing children can put us through some changes on their better days!

My new book- - The Green Book

The Green Book --Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas M.Kostigen--- I bought this book today... Found it (new!) at a Used book store that my friend Gladys and I discovered a couple days ago...one neighborhood over-- in Windsor Terrace.

"...This book is derived from our desire to be environmentally friendly while remaining selfish consumers..."

I did not read that line until after I bought the book, but I tell ya'--i LOVE it. It speaks to me. I struggle with being a more conscious consumer. So having my truth laid bare like that?-- I love it! It inspires me much more than yelling at me about the dolphins I am choking with my shampoo bottle.

Oh yes...growth always...small steps first....It's all good... I am excited about this book. I also give honor and recognition to the planet-loving choices I have ALREADY made. This is good.
